Local SEO checklist for small businesses in India: Google Business Profile, reviews and website
A practical, step-by-step local SEO checklist for Indian small businesses — set up your Google Business Profile properly, earn genuine reviews, keep your details consistent and build a website Google can trust.
When someone nearby searches for "bike service near me", "yoga classes in Dwarka" or "CA in Karol Bagh", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal website results. Being in that map pack can bring calls, direction requests and walk-ins every day — often without spending on ads.
Local SEO is the work that helps you appear there. The good news: most of it is within your control, and much of it is free. Here is the checklist we use.
How Google decides local rankings
Google explains that local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance — how well your profile matches what the person searched for.
- Distance — how far your business is from the searcher or the location in their search.
- Prominence — how well known your business is, including reviews, links and your overall presence online.
You can't move your shop closer to every customer, but you can make your business clearly relevant and steadily more prominent.
Part 1: Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the listing that appears in Maps and the local pack. For many local businesses it is seen more often than the website.
1. Claim and verify your profile. Search for your business on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it; if not, create one. Complete verification — unverified profiles rarely perform well.
2. Use your real business name. Don't add keywords or locations to the name ("Best Bike Service Delhi Cheap"). It breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
3. Choose the right primary category. This is one of the strongest relevance signals. Pick the most specific category that describes your core business, then add a few accurate secondary categories.
4. Get your address and service area right. If customers visit you, show your address and place the pin exactly. If you visit customers and have no shopfront, you can hide the address and set service areas instead.
5. Add hours, including holidays. Wrong hours lead to frustrated customers and bad reviews. Update special hours for festivals and holidays.
6. Fill in services and products. List each service with a short description. Customers read these, and they reinforce relevance.
7. Write a useful description. Explain what you do, who you serve and what makes you different, in plain language. No keyword stuffing.
8. Add real photos. Storefront (so people recognise it), interior, team, work samples and products. Keep adding new ones over time.
9. Link to the right page. Link your website, ideally with tracking parameters so you can see GBP visits in Google Analytics. Make sure the phone number is one you actually answer — or your WhatsApp Business number.
10. Post occasionally. Offers, updates and new work keep the profile active and give customers more reasons to choose you.
Part 2: Reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and whether people choose you.
11. Ask every happy customer. Most people won't leave a review unless asked. Ask at the right moment — after a job well done — and make it easy with your direct review link or a QR code at the counter.
12. Never buy or fake reviews. It violates Google's policies, can get reviews removed or the profile restricted, and customers can often spot fake ones.
13. Don't offer rewards for reviews. Discounts in exchange for reviews are also against the rules.
14. Reply to every review. Thank people for positive reviews. For negative ones, respond calmly, acknowledge the issue and offer to resolve it offline. Future customers read your replies.
15. Keep a steady flow. A regular trickle of recent reviews looks more trustworthy than a burst from two years ago.
Part 3: Consistent business details (NAP)
16. Keep Name, Address and Phone identical everywhere. Your website, GBP, Facebook, Instagram, JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha or any directory you're listed on should show the same details. Inconsistencies confuse both customers and search engines.
17. Clean up duplicates and old listings. If you've moved or changed numbers, update or remove the old listings.
18. Get listed where your customers look. A few relevant, high-quality directories and industry associations are worth far more than hundreds of random listings.
Part 4: Your website
Your website supports your profile by confirming who you are, what you do and where you do it.
19. Put your details on every page. Name, phone and city in the footer; a full contact page with your address (if you serve customers there), hours and a map.
20. Make one clear page per core service. "Scooty repair", "bike servicing" and "spare parts" deserve their own sections or pages with real detail, not one long list.
21. Mention your area naturally. Use the localities you genuinely serve in headings and copy where it makes sense. Don't create dozens of near-identical "service in [area]" pages — they rarely help and can hurt.
22. Add LocalBusiness structured data. Schema markup helps search engines read your name, address, phone, hours and category correctly. Only mark up information that is true and visible.
23. Make it fast on mobile. Most local searches happen on phones, often on patchy connections. Compress images, avoid heavy plugins and test on a real phone.
24. Make contacting you effortless. One-tap call and WhatsApp buttons, a short form, and clear directions. Local customers want answers now.
25. Connect Google Search Console. It shows which searches you appear for, flags indexing problems and helps you see progress over time.
Part 5: Measure and maintain
26. Watch GBP performance. Your profile's performance view shows searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
27. Track enquiries by source. Ask new customers how they found you, and track website and WhatsApp clicks in Google Analytics.
28. Review quarterly. Update photos, services, hours and posts; check for incorrect edits suggested by others; and keep collecting reviews.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixing a broken or incomplete profile can make a difference relatively quickly. Building prominence — reviews, links and a strong website — takes months of steady work. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed positions; no one outside Google controls rankings.
